Hello Maple Village Families and Friends,

Tonight, February 28th, we will be hosting our first Programs & Curriculum Evening here at MVS.  This event is a wonderful opportunity to learn about the Waldorf-based curriculum our school has to offer, from toddlerhood through grade 3.  It is free and open to the public, with no RSVP required, so please feel free to spread the word and bring your friends!

UPDATE: At this time we have enough reservations for childcare tonight that we will be able to offer it. There is a flat rate of $20 for the evening, with additional siblings at $10 each. Please pay our childcare provider Andrea directly when you drop off your child(ren) this evening. Andrea is one of our Extended Day Teachers here at Maple Village.

Programs & Curriculum Evening
Tuesday, February 28, 2012

5:30 – 6:15 p.m.:  Early Childhood (toddlers thru kindergarten)
6:30 – 8:00 p.m.:  Grades One-Three Curriculum
(Attend either or both portions.)

Our early childhood classes provide a warm, calm, secure, aesthetic environment in which the imagination and creativity of the child flourish.   During the first portion of this evening, our own Maple Village School teachers will describe their programs and the goals of Waldorf early childhood education.

During the elementary school years, the Waldorf teacher’s task is to transform all that the child needs to know about the world into the language of the imagination.  For this portion of the evening, we welcome experienced Waldorf grades teacher Blair Manzke from the Pasadena Waldorf School.  She will give a detailed description of the Waldorf curriculum in the early elementary grades.

See you tonight!

The Parent/Toddler class provides an opportunity for parents and their children to come together once a week in a warm, home-like environment. It offers the heart-felt rhythm and beauty of Waldorf early childhood education. The whole child is taught through creative play, song and movement, storytelling and handwork, while the parent is given a place to regain peace and strength in a natural, communal environment.

The Parent/Toddler class at Maple Village School is specifically designed to be a respite from the rushing world and is as much for the parent as it is for the child.

It is a place to connect with your little one while enjoying the company of other like-minded adults in a calm and inspiring environment.  It is my hope that each parent is also given a place of peace, strength and renewal to take with him/her for the week ahead. Children hear and learn songs about the world around them, move their bodies with others, laugh, and dance, all while finding their relationship to the space around them. They enjoy the magic of storytelling and create with their hands using things found in nature – whether it be squeezing oranges for juice, using cabbage to dye silks, grinding wheat seeds into flour, baking bread, carding wool, painting, building a bark boat…

Preparing dye made from cabbage.

Washing carrots from our own harvest.

Our mornings begin outside in the play yard, giving the children and parents a chance to breathe out and greet each other while stretching and moving their bodies. Children pump water, fill wheelbarrows, run, dig, climb, and play in the sandbox.  We then follow each other inside with song, take off our shoes, and begin our circle time. Circle time includes live guitar, song, simple sign language, and an enchanting story.

The children then gather around the table and we sing a simple blessing before enjoying a lovingly prepared snack and fruit together. As the children finish their snack, they are invited to weave in and out of inside play and participation in a seasonal activity or craft, with the parent/guardian helping the child.  Inside time includes the opportunity for the children to play with the creative, natural materials around the room —  tree blocks, a completely stocked wooden kitchen, doll house, barn, puppets, wool balls, silks, and cloth baby dolls.

Our play time transitions to clean-up, and our morning closes by joining once again in a circle to sing our good-bye song.

I have had the pleasure of teaching this class for eight years and enjoy seeing not only mothers and fathers bring their child, but grandparents and nannies as well. We invite you to become a part of our mornings together.

– Lisa McCarthy
